Book Review: In Despair (Princes of the Blood #3) by Megan Derr

My rating: ★★★★★

In Despair (Princes of the Blood #3) by Megan Derr
Publisher: Less than Three Press
Main Characters: Prince Telmé Guldbrandsen, and Korin, heir to the Reach of the House and the Temple of the Sacred Three

It was mentioned in ‘Of Last Resort’ how, and I quote: “twenty-some years ago, nearly all the Legion had been slain, including all of the Princes of the Blood save one: Telmé, who had only been a boy at the time.” After reading that part, I wanted to read ‘In Despair’ right away. The Princes of the Blood were the Queen’s most powerful and most “notorious” among her Legion so naturally I wanted to know how the princes were killed. The third installment of the series mostly revolved around that incident and I found myself wanting to read more about the current Telmé (the Commander of the Princes of the Blood) and Korin (his husband, the High Priest). You see, the ‘current’ Korin was mostly in a ‘coma’ for the most part of the book up until the ending. I thought the book ended perfectly, but I’m hoping that the ‘current’ Telmé and Korin will have their own ‘short’ (story) too.

With that said, I thought the young versions of Telmé and Korin fighting most of the time was cute. But the part that I loved the most in this book was Telmé’s despair. How he found himself helpless and unable to do anything as he watched the love of his life sleep day after day. That, and his despair during the incident twenty-seven years ago when the princes he considered his brothers were slain. His pain for losing his loved ones and the pain he felt for being alone was so acute and so raw. It isn’t easy to deal with the loss of a loved one, nor is it easy to watch and feel helpless while a loved one is suffering.

And this is exactly why I love Megan. It’s not just her endless imagination and ability to build awesome worlds such as in the Princes of the Blood series, or the way she was able to incorporate romance and action scenes in her complicated stories, but also because her works have themes, too.

About the Book

Prince Telmé Guldbrandsen has been groomed since childhood to become a Prince of the Blood and Commander of the Legion. He will be the youngest person to ever take the Blooding—if he can behave long enough to prove he can be trusted with the responsibility. But behaving is difficult when he is constantly forced to endure Korin: heir to the Reach of the House and the Temple of the Sacred Three, and the snotty brat Telmé is expected to someday marry.

Then the unthinkable happens, leaving Castle Guldbrandsen—and the Legion—in pieces. Overwhelmed by fear and grief, Telmé convinces Korin to help him attempt the impossible. But rather than relief, Telmé’s triumph is met with anger and rejection…

Book Review: With Pride (Princes of the Blood #2) by Megan Derr

With Pride (Princes of the Blood #2) by Megan Derr
My Rating: ★★★★★
Publisher: Less than Three Press
Main Characters: Kristof, the Duke of Stehlmore and a Paladin of the Order of the Voice, and Håkon, a Prince of the Blood

My Review:

With Pride by Megan Derr

With Pride by Megan Derr

Reading Megan Derr‘s books is like watching a movie (and a very good one at that, if I may add). At least that’s how it is for me especially for her fantasy books. With Pride isn’t any different in that regard and I’m so happy I picked this up pretty early (this was actually my birthday read, LOL. It seemed to have become a habit for me to read Megan’s works during special occasions). The third installment though, won’t be released until July 2014. Darn, that’s still three months away. 😀 But that’s okay in the sense that the books can be read independent of each other.

So with the second book, we learn more about this world.

With Pride is actually the back story of Kristof, the Duke of Stehlmore, and Håkon, a Prince of the Blood – one of the couples mentioned in book one. It tells us how they met and fell for each other and more; and naturally, the events here occurred before that of the first book: Of Last Resort.

I love the characters. I love that Kristof tries to be strong in spite of his shortcomings. I love that Håkon was actually quite the opposite of the persona that he tries to project (that he wasn’t a callous person after all. But when you think about it, Kristof was misunderstood too. He easily came off as prideful and snobbish even when it wasn’t really the case). And I love that in spite of their weaknesses, that they try to serve to the best of their abilities.

With Pride has the usual ingredients of Megan’s stories that I really love: romance, fighting/bickering, fight scenes, the world building … etc. But there were lines here that were really a favorite of mine:

“Always he was second or third choice. Just once he wanted to be someone’s first choice. He wanted to be offered, accepted, with pride. Not from obligation or with resignation. He wanted to be a preference, not simply the least disappointing of limited options.”

and that last sentence of the book, especially the last two words. Darn. Megan, you really know how to bring tears to my eyes. 🙂

I wish it were longer. I know, I know. I confuse even myself. I complain it’s too long for my liking but then after reading it, I find out I crave for more. So yeah, I’d really, really love to read more lovey-dovey scenes between Håkon and Kristof. LOL. Maybe a separate short? 😛 Ah. I’m insatiable that way.

About the book:

When his sister falls ill, Kristof is ordered to assume a duty never meant for him: become the Duke of Stehlmore and marry a notorious Prince of the Blood. It is one of the oldest honors and duties undertaken by his family, but Kristof feels only resentment that he must leave behind all he knows to serve an arrogant half-demon.

His resentment must be set aside, however, when evil is found lurking far too close to the castle—an evil that has many pieces, controlled by someone they cannot find and who always seems one step ahead of them. Someone who seems to think that demons are little more than toys …

Book Review: Of Last Resort by Megan Derr

Of Last Resort by Megan Derr
My Rating: ★★★★★
Publisher: Less than Three Press

I seriously don’t know what to say. LOL. While it is not my most favorite Megan Derr book, Of Last Resort still rendered me speechless and it took me a few days before reading another book again. I … don’t know why. But sometimes, after reading a Megan Derr book, I don’t want to read another book right after.

As I close this book, I wondered why in hell I waited for a few days before reading this. I should’ve read it right after I downloaded it from LT3’s serials section. But then again, I wanted for it to be my Valentine read!

Of Last Resort started pretty hot! Scorching! ^__^ And then all hell broke loose. This story had pretty much everything – romance, fighting, fantasy, betrayal, and a lot more.

I love Raffe! And Alrin. They’re adorable. 🙂

Can’t wait to read the third installment! (I’m done with the second one already. LOL.) ❤

Of Last Resort by Megan Derr

Of Last Resort by Megan Derr

In a kingdom ravaged by the beasts and terrors of an ancient war, the only hope against them is the army of mixed-blood beings known as the King’s Legion: dragoons, shadowmarch, sorcerers, titans … and the Princes of the Blood, nigh-invincible warriors of fearsome magic and strength, their only weakness a need for pure human blood.

When his brother runs away, Raffé agrees to undergo the Blooding, but he is a pale imitation of his strong, capable brother. No one expects him to survive and become a Prince, merely to die to save the rest of his family and preserve honor.

But runaways and weaklings are the least of the kingdom’s concerns when an ancient evil returns with new tricks, and their only hope lies with knowledge long lost and a fierce bond forged in darkness …
