Review: Breaker (Exile, Volume 1) by Kelly Wyre and AF Henley

My rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 out of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

** spoiler alert ** “Everybody meets the dark alone.”

Breaker (Exile #1) takes us to a place where some people (called Estranged) have superpowers that could annihilate the world. The danger that the Estranged pose caused them to get hunted, shunned, and feared even by their own family. Feared even by their own selves for what they could do to the people around them.

Eddie and Kaeva are two of such people. In this book we feel their fears, their pain, and the great lengths they go through to isolate themselves–to ensure they do not harm others.

I love Breaker (Exile #1) because of these two relatable characters. Like everyone else they seek for their true purpose in life. I also love that they are a walking contradiction. They are strong and yet they are weak, flawed. They are independent and yet they continue to long for that someone who will make them whole. They want to be alone and yet deep down they know they can’t. The loneliness for living alone is heartbreaking.

Five stars for Breaker (Exile #1). I hope to read more about Rivet, Mecken, Oberon, and Lake.

The cab slowed. It was one of many moving along the six grid lanes that would take them into the airport, and Eddie eyed the fading afternoon sky through the dirty windshield. The sun always seemed to set so fast in the metro centers, and Chicago was one of the worst when it came to heavily polluted metropolises. At home—in any of the rural developments, really—it was easy to forget that large stacks had once puffed unfathomable quantities of filth into the air, and had damn near poisoned the entire planet. Here, though, on what the books used to call Interstate 90 and what they now called Gridline Ninety, where the damage had lingered and everything from lungs to concrete finishes had suffered, it wasn’t hard to believe in the slightest. The entire city wore the scars of humanity’s abuse.

The airport loomed to the right of the grid lanes like a giant gray beast. Its old fashioned concrete exterior had a faded, dismal appearance. Not worth the trouble to tear down, a large tower still stood in the middle of the property, but it was no longer used for air traffic control. When he’d taken an interest in air travel a few years prior, the ‘Net had cheerfully told him all about the computer programs and grid-style management that the airlines had developed back in pre-Cure days.

Post-Cure advancements were vague. The ‘Net had advised him that most of his questions were of a classified nature. “Security management”—Security breach – search failed, please try again—and “Proprietary development”—Classified information, please try again with a different search—were not discussed.

Gillian had not been the only person on the planet with extra special talents, everyone knew that. And on more than one occasion Eddie had wondered if those “afflicted” people now ran the airlines. Someone with the right power to control heavy machinery. Someone who could save the airlines, which were all government controlled, some serious cash when it came to pilots and equipment maintenance. A human slave who carried the title of “Estranged” and worked under the scrutinizing eye of government officials.

Of course, his mother had told him the idea was ridiculous, that nobody used the Estranged for anything good. Ever. That was why they had to keep Eddie’s little “issue” a secret. No one could know. She’d make sure she kept him safe and out of the sights of the government if it killed her. If for no other than she couldn’t bear the thought of her friends finding out one of those belonged to her.

He heard her speak as though she sat next to him, “Do you want to end up like Gillian?”

Breaker

In the wake of several near-cataclysmic events, humanity created the Cure, a DNA-altering antidote to death by disease and old age. But all cures come with side effects: a small percentage of the population develops a wide range of powers, some of which are lethal to others, and some which are lethal to the wielder.

These people are called the Estranged, hunted and shunned, safe only on the Island of Exile. It is here that Kaeva and Eddie meet—and where they set a prophecy in motion, quite possibly sealing their own demise, and even the end of Exile.

The Character Discussion

Kelly Wyre: *checking list of characters* Okay. Who decided we were supposed to try to talk about “the mainland” like it was a *(#)&% character???

AF Henley: Um… you… did?

KW: Well. Then. Awesome. It’ll be the best post yet. Clearly. What is it you want to say about the mainland, Henley? The most incredible, edible, mainland?

AFH: Well, I wouldn’t say it’s exactly incredible. It’s barely credible.

KW: True. But then, that’s what apocalyptic-level disasters will do to you. Takes it out of you. Like soccer.

AFH: I played soccer. It kind of sucked — kind of like travelling across the country on a kinetic motor-scooter-cycle would, especially when the mainland IS such a miserable place. ‘Cuz war, disease, famine, and all that shite.

KW: Couldn’t have said it better, myself.

Meanwhile, I think I’d like to chat a bit about the characters in this world. It’s quite the web they weave. See?

New Amsterdam Character Web

CHECK OUT THE MASSIVE VERSION OF THE CHARACTER WEB RIGHT ‘CHERE.

I know that thing makes MY eyes cross, so let’s break it down.

Today? We’re going to talk about Tim Akkard

Dear Tim might be the only straight man left in New Amsterdam. He certainly feels that way sometimes.

Tim is rather non-descript; brown hair and eyes with a nice smile. He’s about Clark’s height – 6’1” or so – and a tad older than Clark (which puts Tim around Daniel’s age; early 40s). He’s naturally slim and stays that way because he often forgets to eat.

About a year and a half ago, or so, Tim lost his wife, Dana, to cancer. He still grieves her, and he is quite convinced there is no one else for him, now. They were perfect for one another. They were kink-compatible, for one thing. Tim’s a Dom-Daddy sort who builds S&M furniture as a side job to his career, which is in architecture.

Or he used to, until Dana got sick.

Tim’s a partner in an architectural firm, and it was that firm which built Bliss & Break. He’s also a 1/4 owner of those clubs. He handles the security, now, and rarely goes to the clubs at all. He rarely goes out, period, really, other than to work and occasionally to Lucian’s house.

Tim met everybody when Clark joined a support group for vets with PTSD after he was discharged from the services (and before he opened Glow or found his various other callings in life). Tim helped Clark organize a group for gay vets that works in conjunction with the various Rainbow Centers around New Amsterdam.

Tim does know about and occasionally support/participate in the activities of the Merry Band of Vigilantes (the nickname Clark gave to himself, Lucian, Chance, and all the rest of the men trying to take down crime in the City). He has no moral qualms about it, that’s for sure; anything to help out the common people he supports.

So that’s Tim. Even though he gets very little “screen time,” he’s one of the characters I get asked about the most regarding when we get his story. Believe me, I’d love to see this guy happy, so as soon as he lets me know what’s up? I’ll let you know. 🙂

As always, if you happen to have questions for this character, please feel free to ask ‘em in the comments! Follow the BLOG TOUR to learn more about the characters of New Amsterdam.

And to win prizes.

‘Cause PRIZES, y’all. They rock.

Thanks for reading!

And definitely catch up with Ellis and Bryn in Earthquakes, the latest installment of the New Amsterdam series. Need a taste? How ‘bout an excerpt?

PS – It’s better to read it with the SOUNDTRACK.

EARTHQUAKES: A New Amsterdam Story

Ellis had been close to martial artists when they were training. He’d sparred with Clark. He’d seen Kris and Daniel and all his friends shoot at the range. There was an economy of motion that the athletically and lethally inclined all shared. Ellis admired it, strived for it, and knew he’d never get there. He was a workhorse, not a prince of motion.

And as he watched Bryn begin to move – not merely stretch or contort but move – Ellis thought of churches and gods and houses of worship.

Bryn’s feet bent in ways Ellis had never seen. Bryn could balance perfectly on one foot or even a single toe. When Bryn shed his pants after a moment or two and took the first few steps in only a pair of snug briefs, Ellis wasn’t hit with a wave of arousal. He was struck dumb with awe. Every line of Bryn was defined. Even the lift of one arm and the point of his fingers were deliberate and beautiful. Ellis stood completely still and held his breath. He was in the presence of some sort of everyday magic and calling attention to himself might break the spell.

The concentration on Bryn’s face was unlike anything Ellis had ever witnessed. He didn’t exist for Bryn. Nothing did except the music, the motion, and whatever spirit had come alive in Bryn to make Bryn…shine. There was no other word for it. The light played through the windows and infused Bryn with incandescence.

And when Bryn started to dance, really dance, he outshone the sun. A turn here, a pointed foot there, a twist and a glide and… God, Ellis didn’t know what Bryn was doing. But he felt it. The music was hopeful and yet haunting, and Bryn’s dance tugged at every ache both old and new in Ellis’s body. Bryn’s face portrayed almost no emotion, but with every dart of his hand, every slice of his leg through the air, with every crumble, fall, and rise, Ellis was struck over and over.

I will try, said Bryn’s reach toward God and Heaven and all things on high.

Though I know I will fail, said the drop of Bryn’s arm.

I will carry on, said the sweep of his leg.

But I’ll lose, said an arch of his back.

I will fight, said a twisting leap.

I will fall, said the thuds of Bryn’s feet on the floor.

I want to love, said the open reach of Bryn’s fingers.

Please, said Bryn’s clutched fist.

Bryn’s expanse of chest, his shut eyes, and his rise onto his curled toes snapped something in Ellis, and as the music faded, Ellis couldn’t take it anymore. He shut off the music, strode to Bryn, and caught Bryn up in his arms. Bryn was sweaty and warm and breathing hard. Ellis couldn’t stop kissing him. Bryn melted against Ellis, resting heavily against him. Ellis ran a hand through Bryn’s hair.

“I see you,” Ellis whispered. “I see you.”

Earthquakes: A New Amsterdam Story
Ellis Parker is a lucky man: he escaped his persecuting family, survived his tour of duty, and met Maxwell Clark in the city of New Amsterdam. Clark showed Ellis more than the ropes: Clark helped Ellis figure out who he is – a gay submissive with a massive fixation on a beautiful, mysterious ballet dancer named Bryn Rothe. Ellis knows a Good Man when he sees one, and he wants nothing more than to score a first date with Bryn.

Little does Ellis know that Bryn has a violent past that is crawling out of shallow graves to haunt him. Even his hectic schedule and beloved stage aren’t enough to distract him. It’s impossible for Bryn to figure out how he feels about Ellis with his demons between them, but when Ellis saves Bryn not once but twice, Bryn is forced to admit that there’s something about Ellis that Bryn might not merely want but need.

Together, they journey to the scene of Bryn’s original crime – Charles Towne, South Carolina. There they will dig up secrets that might explain Bryn’s tortured life but might also be his – and Ellis’s – undoing.

Book Review: Baby’s on Fire by A.F. Henley

In 1974 Gerry Faun gets the break of his life—an opportunity to meet gorgeous, openly bisexual, glam-rock idol Mark Devon. Mark’s world is new, exciting, and Gerry finally gets to explore the side of his sexuality that he’s kept hidden. But the press is everywhere, and when Gerry’s father gets wind of what’s going on behind his back, Gerry ends up on the street. Mark offers to let Gerry come along with the tour and Gerry jumps at the chance. The tour is a never-ending party—and the start of what seems to be a perfect relationship for him and Mark. Until Mark’s manager decides Gerry isn’t worth the trouble he’s stirring up.

In 1994 Gerry is finally coming out of some tough times—he has a job that pays the bills, a car that hasn’t quite broken down, and a small rental in Jersey City. After a decade of barely getting by, if life was as good as it was going to get, Gerry figures he’ll manage just fine. It would be easier if he wasn’t still haunted by the man the media won’t let him forget, the man who stole his heart and then broke it… the man that’s shown up pleading for a second chance.

My Review

Warning: Spoiler Alert!

Smokin’ hot.

I LOVED Baby’s on Fire by A.F. Henley. It’s my most favorite out of his works that I’ve read so far because of a lot of things, and well, also because it’s a “the one that got away” trope, a personal favorite of mine.

Gerry Faun or Fawn, as Mark Devon calls him, jumped into a messy situation wide-eyed. He did it because he knew it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, it will never pass his way again. Luckily for him, Mark Devon, aka Maxx Starlight reciprocates his feelings. Unfortunately, the person Mark was at the time made relationship for the both of them impossible. Twenty years later and Mark reappeared but for Fawn, it’s twenty years too late.

I loved the way Baby’s on Fire was written, I loved that AF Henley wrote the then and now alternately. When I reached the end of the book, I wanted to weep. Lol. I was frustrated, I wanted more. But not because the book’s ended with a cliffhanger but because I wanted to read more about Gerry and Mark.

I’ve reread Baby’s on Fire twice since April.

About The Book

Title: All In: Playing the Fool
Author: Lane Hart
Genre: Romance / Erotica

WARNING: THIS BOOK IS FOR 18+ ONLY DUE TO THE SEXUALLY EXPLICIT SCENES (M/F, M/F/M, M/M) AND ADULT LANGUAGE.

Will Reavis is the last man standing. All of his lifelong friends are settling down, and seem nauseatingly happy with their significant others. Even his little sister Jules recently married, taking off with Will’s best friend.

While Dylan and Jules are away on their honeymoon, they leave their penthouse apartment and expensive vehicles in Will’s care. After a night on the town with his new wingman, criminal defense attorney Joe Montgomery, Will meets the woman of his dreams.

Knowing a beautiful woman like Lacy would never go for a normal, nothing-special guy like him for more than a one-night stand, Will let’s her believe that all of Dylan’s riches are his own.

Lacy Pierce is newly single and not looking to settle down anytime soon. Why would she do something so foolish, when she knows how things always end? Her own father had affairs on her mother, and her famous football playing ex-boyfriend Zack Bradford cheated on her repeatedly during the year they were together.

Will seems like Zack’s opposite, and even better, he looks … safe. When she finds out the cute, unassuming, intelligent guy is actually the first man that can show her the wild passion she’s been missing out on, she reconsiders her no commitment rule. That is until she finds out Will has lied to her, and only sees her as a one-night fling.

Fate eventually steps in to bring the two back together.

When Lacy agrees to help out in her father’s law firm during the summer, she has no idea that the young attorney she’ll be working for is none other than Joe Montgomery, Will’s good friend. She’s also surprised to find out that Will is actually the IT guy for her father’s firm, when their paths cross once again.

After Lacy and Will get hot and heavy in public one night, they not only end up with criminal charges, Lacy’s father puts an end to idea of them continuing a relationship. He threatens to have Will, Joe, and Will’s friend and Joe’s assistant, Jess, all fired.

Unwilling to risk the consequences, Lacy tries to stop thinking about Will. Her hot new boss makes for a pretty nice distraction, and the two pass the time teasing and flirting with each other. Things begin to get complicated with Lacy and Joe, especially when it becomes clear that her and Will aren’t over.

Will does a little soul-searching and decides that he’ll do whatever it takes to have the woman of his dreams … even if that means indulging in some of her naughtier fantasies! But all relationships are fragile, and when Lacy finds out that the only two men she’s ever trusted have both conspired to betray her, it’ll take a tragedy to help her see that the ones we love occasionally deserve our forgiveness. Lacy will also find out the hard way that her wild and foolish decisions will eventually catch up with her, impacting all the men in her life.
