Guest Post: My Writing Process for Better At Weddings Than You by Mina V. Esguerra

The thing about writing and how I do it: It changes, depending on what I happen to be doing, and where I am in my life at the time. I’ve written about my writing process before and I should preface this with how it’s probably going to change, again, once I have more or less time. In writing my new book Better At Weddings Than You, here’s what I did:

  • I outlined. I’m a fan of this method, because it keeps me focused! Sitting down to plan out a story’s major events doesn’t just give me a guide to help me write, but it solves many of the problems I’d encounter before I start.
  • I researched. Often I approach a story with a perspective I’m familiar with, but I also challenge myself to write about things that are interesting but not necessarily in my life. So this requires research, meeting real people who do whatever it is, visiting certain places.
  • I set a schedule and target word count. As I was writing this book, I was also involved in more reader community events that had to be scheduled on a weekend—which meant I couldn’t write on weekends anymore. So I adjusted my schedule and tried to set aside an hour every weekday, and when I did write, I sprinted. 1,000 words if I could. I wasn’t always successful, but the days when I did made up for it!
  • I wrote everything, even when it looked meh, and edited later. When stuck, I trained myself to just write whatever was coming to me, even if I didn’t like how it looked on the page. I know by now that I can’t expect consistently good stuff on a strict schedule—writing for me is warming up, and sometimes writing a bunch of crap first. Editing will and has fixed it later.
  • I promised myself I’d celebrate. Reaching “The End” is tough, so I motivate myself with treats. It also helps me determine an actual end, otherwise I’ll be putting it off and revising for too long.

Book description

Daphne Cardenas is the best wedding planner around, and everyone knows it. That’s why her friend Greg hired her as an emergency replacement one month before his wedding—because he fears his fiancée Helen is falling for the guy they first hired for the job.

Aaron Trinidad is new to the wedding industry but years of conference planning and loads of charm make him good at it. Really good at it. Planning the wedding of his friend Helen should be easy, and it is. To be unceremoniously fired isn’t good for his new career, but the chance to learn from the best might be the silver lining.

Aaron and Daphne have chemistry, but there’s history with Helen that at least one other person considers a threat. Who’s the planner who can fix this impending disaster?

(Part of the Chic Manila series, but can be read as a standalone.)

About the Book

COVER REVEAL - PerfectlyPlanned

Title: Perfectly Planned

Author: Linda O’Connor

Genre: Romantic Comedy

She’s got it all Perfectly Planned . . .

Chloe Keay is on the hunt for the perfect sperm donor, but who knew it would be this hard? So many things to consider in a father – sure height and hair color are important, but what about the real issues. How does he feel about bagpipe music? Does he buy the extended warranty? Skittles or M&Ms? She doesn’t want an average Joe. She’s narrowed it down to two candidates and has the perfect plan to pick the heir and the spare.

Staff Sergeant Rip Logan, head of the elite Tactics and Rescue Unit, has a gut feeling that Chloe Keay is trouble. She’s a sexy little spark plug who radiates innocence, but it doesn’t jibe with her suspicious behavior and probing questions. The fact that he’s attracted irritates him. What exactly is she after? And should he go with his gut or follow his heart?

Planning for love – what could possibly go wrong?

Author Bio

Linda has been writing romance novels for three years and sincerely thanks Debby Gilbert at Soul Mate Publishing for the ultimate encouragement to her writing – with the leap to publishing. She has many titles including Doctor, Mom, and proud Canadian, but “Linda O’Connor – hereinafter called the Author” is one of the sweetest.

Contemporary romantic comedies are her favorite novels to read and write. Linda balances writing with her work as a physician at an Urgent Care Clinic and being a mom to three sons (luckily grown and capable of throwing together a decent meal, in a pinch). She also likes to keep active and cycle, cross-country ski, skate, walk with her husband or dance every day.

Laugh every day. Love every minute.

Guest Post and Giveaway: Back to us by Teresa Roman

A happy Monday to you, reader! ❤ We have here today Ms. Teresa Roman to share her experiences writing her latest book titled, “Back to us” as well us several writing
tips for aspiring authors out there! ❤

My experiences writing Back To Us and writing tips:

The main characters of my book were in my head for a while before I began writing my book. Once I had them squared away I decided to set my story in New York City, which is where I graduated from college.

The apartment my main character Jessica shares with her brother is pretty much the exact same one that I shared with my own brother during that time of my life. Once I had the characters and setting down the story just flowed from there. I usually try and just write and get my whole story out before going back to edit. I went through my book to edit it probably around five times after I finished the writing part. After that I had two people beta read my book for me. They loved it, so that encouraged me to move forward. I hired an editor and then a book cover designer.

Shortly after that I read about the Kindle Scout program. I submitted my book and a month later got the good news that my book was selected for publication.
I was ecstatic.

Jho-sigstyledivThe biggest writing tip I can give anyone is to hire an editor and know that when it comes to editors you get what you pay for. If you’re quoted a low price that often means a sub-par job. Be careful when selecting your beta readers. A good beta reader will be honest and constructive. They will give you concrete examples of how to improve your work. The other tip I have is one that every writer has heard before but it’s so true that it bears being repeated over and over again: keep reading and keep writing.

Book Review: Stranger on the Shore by Josh Lanyon

Rating: ★★★★★

Published May 2014 by Carina Press

StrangerontheShoreOMG. LOL. I don’t know what to say… Josh Lanyon had done it again. The thing is, I’ve said the same, exact thing after reading his Christmas codas in his blog… and his other works that I’ve read before that.

Josh’s works make me laugh; make me feel on the edge of my seat; make my heart clench; bring tears to my eyes; keep on making me guess (who the culprit is), render me speechless. Stranger on the Shore made me feel all of these. I just wish there were more lovey-dovey moments between Griff and Pierce before they jumped in the sack but that’s just me, I guess. 😛

I find it romantic that even as a kid, Brian couldn’t get his hands off of Pierce. Aww, really sweet.

My most favorite part of the book is when Griff was reading through Gemma’s journal and there was that entry in July 4th that made me bawl like a baby. It was like a punch in the gut. It’s just… I remember reading and going through my mother’s things when I was 12… trying to get a glimpse of how she was as a person. In the end, I stopped doing it because those books, notebooks, slum book could hardly give me an idea of who she was. Just that she loved reading, loved, Science… had a very neat penmanship, loved a cheesy book and music and that’s it. Put that way, she could have been anyone.

Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that this is why I love Josh Lanyon. He understands human emotions and he successfully translates those into words every time making the readers laugh or cry, commiserate with the main character or be mad at him and so on and so forth.

Then of course there was the mystery element in his books as a bonus. 🙂

Looking forward to reading his latest work: The Boy with the Painful Tattoo. ❤

Stranger on the Shore by Josh Lanyon [Goodreads]

Twenty years ago young Brian Arlington, heir to Arlington fortune, was kidnapped. Though the ransom was paid, the boy was never seen again and is presumed dead. Pierce Mather, the family lawyer, now administers and controls the Arlington billions. He’s none too happy, and more than a little suspicious, when investigative journalist Griffin Hadley shows up to write about the decades-old mystery. Griff shrugs off the coldly handsome Pierce’s objections, but it might not be so easy to shrug off the objections of someone willing to do anything to keep the past buried.

Book Review: Maybe This Time by AM Arthur

Review:

Rating: ★★★★☆

Published July 21st 2014 by Carina Press

MaybeThisTimeHurting Donner Davis met Ezra Kelly at a time when he was reeling over the death of his lover, Jacob. Unfortunately, Ezra himself had his own issues, and it was a lot.

I liked the theme of the book: there was the abuse (their friend Romy being in a series of abusive relationship), Ezra himself (being in a previous relationship with a guy who only used him and well, there was his family issues (his family being homophobic and unable to accept Ezra) and I don’t even want to begin about that one. There was also the issue of Ezra being raped as part of his therapy courtesy of Dr. Tanner. [Ezra can give me a run for my money in terms of family issues]). And of course, there was the pain of losing someone (Donner losing Jacob).

It is hard to love someone else when one couldn’t forgive and love themselves. It’s a very long and strenuous process not only for the affected individual but for the people around them as well. That much is true. Eventually, Donner and Ezra were able to sort things out, well, not everything, but it was a start and while their relationship may not be perfect, they were trying.

I personally believe that for one to be able to forgive and move on, one has to learn how to empathize and care for other people which is exactly what Donner and Ezra did. They helped Romy back to his feet, and they continued Jacob’s cause which was the Street Feed.

As a regular at gay hotspot Pot O Gold, Ezra Kelley avoids his tangled emotions with the simplicity of one-night stands and attachment-free hookups. Until the night bartender Donner Davis picks him up off the floor after a misunderstanding and too much tequila. Ezra can’t remember the last time someone was…nice. It’s more than he deserves.

Witnessing his lover’s death two years ago has Donner trapped in a holding pattern: living in his sister’s basement, working at the Pot and flirting with the customers. He’s not above spending a night with the gorgeous Ezra, but love is not in the cards. That’s more than he’s ready for.

A passionate night leads to a connection neither man expects, and they take the first steps to something that looks like a real relationship. But Ezra’s been running from himself so long he doesn’t know how to live any other way. And Donner can’t risk his heart just to lose everything again. They’ll both need the strength to let go of the past if they want to get it right this time.

About A.M. Arthur

A.M. Arthur was born and raised in the same kind of small town that she likes to write about, a stone’s throw from both beach resorts and generational farmland. She’s been creating stories in her head since she was a child and scribbling them down nearly as long, in a losing battle to make the fictional voices stop. She credits an early fascination with male friendships (bromance hadn’t been coined yet back then) and “The Young Riders” with her later discovery of and subsequent love affair with m/m romance stories.

When not exorcising the voices in her head, she toils away in a retail job that tests her patience and gives her lots of story fodder. She can also be found in her kitchen, pretending she’s an amateur chef and trying to not poison herself or others with her cuisine experiments.

Excerpt

MaybeThisTime[Ezra] listened to the footsteps on the stairs moving closer, getting louder, timing it so he whipped open the door with Donner’s knuckles poised to knock. Donner still wore his black leather pants and shiny green shirt, but he’d washed his face free of eyeliner and lip gloss.

“Hey,” Donner said. His hand dropped. His other was clutching the strap of a backpack that looked as old as dirt and ready to fall apart.

“Come in.” Ezra stepped aside and let him enter. “I should warn you, they’re at it already.”

“Huh?” Donner glanced at the living room. “Oh, I see.”

“Do you mind?”

“Not a bit. I’ve seen more risqué things at the Pot, believe me.”

“You’ll have to tell me all about it sometime.”

“Sure thing.”

“Want something to drink?”

“No, I’m fine.”

Ezra’s mind raced for something clever or sexy to say. He’d looked forward to this all night, and now that Donner was in his apartment, he was fumbling like an idiot. This was not him.

“Oh, hey!” Alessandro sat up and twisted his head around. The position made him sway a little. “Look, babe, Dasher’s here.”

“Donner,” Jaime said. He wrestled out from beneath his boyfriend, shirt rucked up to his armpits. “Hey, you made it.”

“Dude, what’s your first name?”

Jaime knuckled Alessandro in the shoulder. “Shut up. You’re drunk.”

“So?”

“Ignore him,” Ezra said to Donner. “Actually, feel free to ignore both of them.”

Donner chuckled. “They’re pretty entertaining, if you ask me.”

“Wait until they start showing off.”

“Forget it.” Alessandro started tugging Jaime toward the spare bedroom. “He’s all mine tonight, amigo. You’ve got your own date.”

Jaime managed a faux-helpless shrug as he allowed himself to be manhandled into the bedroom. The door shut with a solid bang that made Ezra jump. Then he snickered. So much for manners. He understood the sentiment, though. He didn’t much feel like sharing Donner with anyone else.

Strong arms slid around his waist from behind and laced fingers across his belly. A solid chest and abs pressed against his back and ass, and breath tickled his ear. The hold was loose, the intentions clear. “You want to fuck me, don’t you?” Donner whispered, mouth hovering close to his left ear.

Ezra shivered.
