Connor by Dormaine G.

I have been waiting for my hard copy of Connor to arrive for almost two months now. It was sent to me around November 7 but it hasn’t arrived yet! Needless to say, I’m already at my limit. LOL. 🙂 I’m going to start reading my ebook, I hope you’ll grab a copy now and read it with me.

Happy reading!

Book Excerpt

I, Connor, thought I was the average sarcastic teenager, living a normal life like everyone else with a crazy, annoying family. Wrong. I recently discovered that I have certain abilities. Abilities that link me to others like me, and others, unlike me, who want to cause me harm.

I found out this world is not what I thought, as well as the strange creatures in it, and that frightens me. I had to grow up fast and find the strength to defend myself from those beings who don’t want me here or who will take my strengths by any means necessary.

Throughout this craziness, I met a wonderful guy named Tony, who has abilities too. With him and several others like us we discover who we are and how we came to be.

Then there is Ronin, a being who is young, smart, and cunning. He is set on taking his revenge out on me yet I have no idea why.

Book Review: Embrace by Megan Derr

Embrace by Megan Derr

Embrace by Megan Derr

Embrace by Megan Derr
My Rating: ★★★★★

This is why I love Megan Derr. She can make a brilliant story out of a very simple plot/idea – and turn them into something complicated and different. That’s what sets her books apart from the others of the same theme.

Embrace is like that. At a glance, you may think that this is just another vampire story. But it isn’t. I really don’t know how she does it. But just like her other works that I’ve managed to read so far, reading a page meant wanting to turn it to the next page and not putting it down until I’m done.

And, just like her previous works, I also love the characters in this one. They made me laugh, giggle, smile, feel ‘kilig.’ The ending of this book is simple but fitting after all the issues and mystery and whatever they are called. I know it’s already the ending, and it was satisfactory; still, a part of me wanted to read more.

While I acknowledge that the book could use further editing, I don’t see why it was pulled out of the market for good. I guess I just have to be glad that I have a copy of it.

I really hope to meet her in person someday. I’m a huge Megan Derr fan. I’ll never get tired of saying how awesome she is!

Now, I’ll be off to read another book of hers. Or maybe review another.

Cheers! ^__^

by Mina V. Esguerra

When Hannah is asked to take the place of the goddess of love, she agrees because it was assigned to her by the love of her life-who just so happens to be the very gorgeous sun god. Though she does have a knack for listening to other people’s heartaches, she’s totally new at it and can’t understand how she can help bring love into people’s lives when she can’t even get one particular boy to pay attention to her. Will Hannah ever survive this goddess gig? Or will she end up heartbroken as well?

My Review:

Coming Home is AJ Matt’s first published story.

I published this because I fell in love with it right after reading it for the first time.

It struck a chord deep in my heart. As the entire world know – typhoon Haiyan wreaked havoc in Central Philippines and indeed, most families there would be without some of their loved ones this Christmas.

In Coming Home, Noah’s little family just experienced a miracle this Christmas. May we all experience some form of miracle this season as we all try to cope with our own issues and struggles.

Congratulations to AJ Matt for having written such a heartwarming story. Looking forward to reading more of your works.

Happy reading and happy holidays, everyone! ^__^

Would also like to thank our editor, Via Blancia and our photographer Adrian Albano for such an awesome shot!

Rating: Five out of five stars. Recommended to everyone who loves heartwarming short reads.

Book Review

** spoiler alert ** Warning: Do not read if you haven’t read the book yet!

In Over Her Head was five stars for me until I realized who Erika was going to end up with. By then, the story went downhill for me, noooooooo!

Don’t get me wrong, I was all up for Erika ending with Richard right at the very start of the story. But, as I was reading and I was learning more about Jerome, I couldn’t help but root for the guy. I mean, who wouldn’t?

Yes, I’m Team Jerome, LOL! Never mind that he had a playboy rep, he was a sweet guy and I thought he really was willing to change for Erika not to mention that they had chemistry.

It’s just that I never really learned more about Richard and there were no “kilig” moments between Erika and him. I’ve only ever seen his weaknesses. Well, I could go on and on but I really don’t want to say any more without revealing the story for you more than I already have.

I finished the story feeling like the ending happened before it should. I really would’ve wanted to read more about the Richard-Erika pairing if only to be able to like the ending even for just a bit. I mean, the story ended with Richard still a douchebag in my eyes. LOL.

Rating: 3.5 stars which means that I liked it (just not the ending, LOL – there’s no getting over this one for me).

Recommended to romance readers and for those who couldn’t get over their first loves.

My Review:

I had wanted to read The Real Score the moment I laid my eyes on its cover. I’m glad that I did.

The Real Score is a really cute story about a simple office girl who fell in love with a front man. I’m not sure how much of it is plausible in real life. I’ve never been into boy bands and while I watch concerts sometimes, I’ve never been into a meet-and-greet. Needless to say, I enjoyed that part of the book very much.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this book. It made me smile a lot. I removed one star because they’ve let the “issue” go on for so long. At first, I found it cute but later on, I wanted to bop them both on the head. LOL.

My rating: 4/5

Recommended to romance readers especially to those who are enamored with boy bands and concerts and the like.

[Blog Tour: Guest Post] Writing with a Group vs. Writing Alone: Thoughts and Insights on Writing In Over Her Head for #romanceclass by Anne Plaza

IOHHHeader

There are writers who work best when they are alone, following their own schedules, while there are some who thrive in a support group with other writers with a specific deadline to meet.

Prior to joining #romanceclass (or any other writing class for that matter), I knew early on that I’m the kind of writer who falls in the latter bracket, and this is one of the things that worked well for me when I decided to join the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). In fact, I realize that being under pressure works well for me in terms of conquering procrastination and sticking to a schedule. I won NaNoWrimo three times in the five years that I’ve joined the writing event because of the local and international WriMo community that supports each other throughout the entire month of November.

When I signed up for Mina Esguerra’s #romanceclass, I intended to wing it not just by word count alone, but to actually do something about the story after writing it. My previous experience with NaNoWriMo told me that I can definitely finish a 30k-word novella (as what was required in the class), but the main challenge would be to see through the end of this exercise, i.e., to get the final output published.

Throughout the class, I really enjoyed interacting with my fellow classmates in our once-a-month meetings and online discussions. Mina’s lessons and assignments shed light on some of the areas I was usually stumped over (particularly in outlining). I breezed through the assignments, until I started writing the Act 2 part of my novella.

Needless to say, I was stuck. There was something about the plot and character development that I didn’t like, IOHHQ02but since I needed to beat the deadline (and I had my NaNo instinct to just turn off my inner editor for the moment), I continued to write. When I managed to finish all 30k+ words, I knew I was going to have my hands full addressing plot holes.

Thankfully, I got in touch with an editor upon Mina’s recommendation. My editor helped me polish and refine the story as well as work on the plot holes I was so frustrated on. I can’t say enough how important it is to have an editor look into your manuscript and tell you what works and what doesn’t.

What I liked about the class can be summed up in the following:

• The class was well-paced with assignments, Q&As, face-to-face discussions with fellow writers, and the writing exercise itself. The discussions (both online and in person) helped me address plot questions and deal with writing slumps.

• Previously, I didn’t have a structured way to outline, and this class helped me work with a framework that was easy to do and worked well for my plot.

• Seeing my fellow writers finish their manuscripts also pushed me to work on mine (I’m a chronic procrastinator) and stick to my schedule so I could evenly balance work and writing.

• The best takeaway from the class was the publishing insights. We were given options, tips, and suggestions on how we can get our work out there. What’s even more fortuitous were the publishing opportunities that presented itself along the way.

Now that the class is over, the discussions and interactions still continue! As a matter of fact, we are in the process of putting together a young adult/coming-of-age anthology set in a fictional Philippine high school. Not only that, I’m also at work on writing my next novel to be published hopefully by next year. 🙂
